Intel is seeking to buy global foundries, the world's fourth largest chipmaker, for $30 billion, foreign media quoted people familiar with the matter as saying. If the talks go well, the deal will be the semiconductor giant's biggest ever acquisition and boost Intel's plans to produce more chips for other technology companies.

In 2008, chip makers Intel and AMD took two completely different paths: Intel continued to manufacture its own chips to maintain complete control; Amd decided to spin off its semiconductor business and set up Gexin, relying on it and other manufacturers to produce chips. Gexin is currently owned by Mubadala, the Abu Dhabi government investment arm, but is headquartered in the US.

However, the deal is not a certainty. The talks appeared to be between Intel and mobadara investment, not including Gerson itself, because a company spokesman said it had not negotiated with Intel. Meanwhile, Gexin is likely to continue to push ahead with its planned initial public offering.

The reason why Intel wants to buy Gexin is obvious. The company is actually strengthening its OEM business now. In an effort to turn around the struggling situation, pat Gelsinger, Intel's new chief executive, said in March that the company would strive to become a chipmaker for other companies in a market dominated by TSMC and Samsung Electronics. With a market value of about $225 billion, Intel has committed more than $20 billion this year to expand its chip manufacturing facilities in the United States. Gelsinger also said the company will expand more at home and abroad.

Gexin is one of the world's largest professional chip production companies and is moving its headquarters from Santa Clara, California to Maltese, New York. According to trendforce, a market research firm, Gexin has about 7% of the chip foundry market in terms of revenue. The largest chip companies, including Qualcomm and NVIDIA, rely on third-party manufacturers to produce products and prefer to focus on design rather than running their own factories. NVIDIA overtook Intel last year to become the most valuable semiconductor company in the United States.

Like Intel and TSMC, Gexin is expanding its manufacturing capacity in the face of global semiconductor supply shortages. Last month, the company said it had broken ground on a chip production facility in Singapore with an investment of more than $4bn.

The shortage of chips has disrupted production in various industries, resulting in the temporary closure of automobile factories and a decrease in the supply of goods such as computers and many household appliances. Automakers have been particularly hard hit, unable to get enough chips for all vehicles. The lack of core also began to push up the cost of some electronic products.

U.S. President Joe Biden has promised to take measures to help ease the chip shortage, including spending tens of billions of dollars to increase chip production capacity. Other governments have made similar commitments. TSMC, the world's largest chip maker, said this week that it expects the chip supply problems that hinder automakers will begin to ease in the coming months after increasing auto chip production. Automakers have hinted that they expect the shortage to continue into next year.

Gelsinger was a veteran of Intel, served as chief technology officer, and later left Intel to take charge of VMware. In February, Gelsinger returned to Intel as chief executive after a major delay in Intel's chip manufacturing under his predecessor, Bob swan. Gelsinger vowed to make Intel more reliable in making new chips.

In October 2020, Intel agreed to sell its flash manufacturing business to sk Hynix of South Korea for about $9 billion. The company's biggest deal so far is to buy Altera for $15.4 billion in 2015. In 2017, Intel agreed to buy Mobileye, an Israeli manufacturer of driving aid systems, for about $14 billion.

Mergers and acquisitions have swept the semiconductor industry as industry participants seek to expand their size and product portfolio to support more and more Internet connected everyday products. Last year, analog devices agreed to buy Maxim integrated products for more than $20 billion, and NVIDIA agreed to buy arm, a UK chip design company backed by Softbank group, for $40 billion. Amd later agreed to buy Xilinx for about $35 billion.
